El Borko began as a way to play surf and related music styles. Like other genre based groups I have formed, just learning the style is not enough. In the case of El Borko, I wanted to follow the example of bands like Mermen, Daikaiju, and Slacktone who took surf music in new directions. The result was surprising. After years of searching, I found a place for my style of instrumental music.
I have written instrumental music since the 1980s but never found a framework for presenting it. Surf rock is simple but it blends so well with so many other genres. From this platform, one can explore punk, prog, classical, and even jazz. Application of the surf aesthetic to my own music defines and unifies it.
El Borko has become my vehicle for instrumental music. It will continue to expand as it reflects my own ideas and the influences of the band members who pass through. Keeping the element of surf maintains a sense of fun and absurdity which I hope will keep it from getting pretentious.
Like monkeys throwing typewriters at hungry dinosaurs, El Borko will rock, weirdly into the future.
